This East End trendsetter has always had a hedonistic side. Now a stomping ground for city and creative types, Shoreditch was once a rowdy hamlet just outside the city walls where Shakespeare honed his craft as prostitutes and poets revelled in the streets. Today, industrial-style loft apartments, Victorian terraces and warehouse conversions epitomise inner city living while the Tube, Overground and multiple bus routes offer brilliant transport links.
Foodies flock to Shoreditch for a culinary scene that offers everything from street food to Michelin stars – the former at Truman Brewery and Dinerama, the latter at the Clove Club and Lyle’s – and there are plenty of quirky bars and old-school boozers. The arrival of the Ace Hotel and Shoreditch House may have refined things a little, but Shoreditch still knows how to have fun.
Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist lived in South Shoreditch, but today you’re more likely to find boutique brands like A.P.C and Aesop lining the Dickensian streets. Redchurch Street is a shoppers dream, as is Boxpark, the world’s first pop-up mall. On Brick Lane, discover vintage delights from every decade. From whiling away an afternoon at the Geffrye museum to catching the latest must-see at the Electric cinema, you’re never short of something to do in Shoreditch.
